Center for Orthopedic Wellness

The outstanding orthopedic surgeons at Henry County Medical Center use advanced joint replacement techniques to help patients regain quality of life. State-of-the-art minimally invasive techniques reduce scarring and pain, and help you recover faster. In fact, most patients are walking within hours and are home after one or two days. Some patients are able to go home on the same day.

Adding to the excellent patient experience, our Center for Orthopedic Wellness offers private rooms in a dedicated orthopedic unit for the ultimate in-patient and family-centered care, privacy and comfort.

A Team Approach to Care

The Center for Orthopedic Wellness at Henry County Medical Center brings together a combination of surgical expertise and state-of-the-art technology to deliver compassionate, orthopedic care at the highest level.

Patients benefit from a highly-skilled, multidisciplinary team, which includes the area’s top orthopedic surgeons, orthopedic trained nurses and technicians, onsite rehabilitation with outstanding physical therapists and a gym facility located near the patient rooms.

Physical and Occupational Therapy

Our Rehabilitation Program provides joint replacement patients with the highest quality of care by maximizing their mobility and physical abilities. Rehabilitation expertise is provided by Henry County Medical Center for both our inpatients as well as our outpatients.

Inpatients will be seen at their bedside after surgery to resume walking and other daily activities. Additionally, patients in the Center for Orthopedic Wellness will be able to rehab together daily in the patient gym located near their rooms. A daily schedule of these activities will be provided to help patients know what to expect each day of recovery as an inpatient.

Patients who continue their care with us after surgery through our HCMC Center for Wellness and Rehabilitation, HCMC Home Health and Hospice, and/or HCMC Plumley Rehabilitation facility will have the advantage of being seen by therapists who are members of the care team and understand the surgical procedures they have undergone. Additionally, patients who utilize our services will continue in the Center for Orthopedic Wellness program because the same protocols are carried throughout our care centers.

In addition to a highly-trained staff, our rehabilitation program offers outpatients convenient hours. Our Plumley Rehabilitation facility is highly rated and our Home Health and Hospice has been recognized as a Home Care Elite Agency in 2010 and 2011 as well as the Paris Post Intelligencer’s Readers’ Choice for Home Health Care in 2012 and 2013.

Exceptional Patient Care, Privacy and Comfort

Joint replacement patients can begin their recovery in our post-surgical orthopedic unit located on the 3rd Tower of the hospital. The private rooms accommodate patients and facilitate family visits. This state-of-the-art facility is outfitted with furniture and equipment made especially for joint replacement patients, such as higher-rise chairs and devices to ensure safe and comfortable patient lifting and movement.

This unit reflects Henry County Medical Center‘s commitment to family-centered comprehensive care. In addition to patient rooms that ensure privacy and comfort, the unit also offers common areas for educational programs, social interaction and proximity to other services of Henry County Medical Center, including physical therapy.

Patient Education

As part of the commitment to individualized care and education, the Center for Orthopedic Wellness at Henry County Medical Center offers a Total Joint Wellness Program class for patients about to undergo joint replacement surgery.

The goal of the total joint class is to familiarize the patient and his/her “coach” (a loved one who will help the patient through his/her recovery) with the expectations of joint replacement surgery. The program covers a range of topics from pre-surgery planning to the progression of the post-op period including what to expect during the hospital stay and rehabilitation following. In addition to being an information session, total joint class is also designed to help alleviate any apprehension the patient may have about the surgery and healing process.

Total joint class, which lasts about two hours, is held in a group setting consisting of several patients and their coaches. Patients are given a workbook either at the physician’s office prior to class or at class, containing helpful information, checklists, tools, and room for notes. The atmosphere is comfortable and friendly.

This class can be scheduled the same day as your pre-admission testing for surgery and will be held in the HCMC education classrooms, located at 301 Tyson Ave. You will receive your appointment time from the physician’s office and class will either be before or following your pre-admission testing appointment.

During the class, the group meets with a pharmacist, care navigator, nurse and physical therapist. A comprehensive educational presentation will be viewed, explaining what will occur in surgery, the recovery process, and what patients can do to make a smooth return to normal life. The coaches are prepared to provide a familiar face and a helping hand from the moment the patient arrives in his/her hospital room following surgery.

Expert, Individualized Care

At the core of the Center for Orthopedic Wellness is a team of experienced, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeons. They boast a variety of specialties – all at the forefront of advances in joint replacement technology and orthopedic surgical techniques.

Our surgeons are experts in minimally invasive surgery. Research show that minimally invasive procedures, which are performed with smaller incisions, result in smaller scars and less pain, and allow for a faster recovery than traditional surgery methods. An individualized approach is taken in every aspect of the joint replacement experience. This includes the utilization of the most appropriate joint replacement technique, patient education with a personal touch, a rehabilitation program designed to meet patients’ varying lifestyle needs, and a dedicated space with dedicated staff who are here to make your recovery as smooth as possible.

Dedication to Ensuring Best Outcomes for You

The Center for Orthopedic Wellness wants to ensure that patients are indeed ready for surgery. Part of that is ensuring that patients are healthy and able to proceed without complications.

Methicllin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection is caused by a strain of staph bacteria that’s become resistant to the antibiotics commonly used to treat ordinary staph infections. MRSA can occur in the hospital setting or in the wider community – among healthy people. This form is known as community-associated MRSA (CA-MRSA) and many people can be carriers without even knowing it. If left untreated prior to surgery, it can result in infection.

Our orthopedic surgeons will be testing appropriate patients as a part of the pre-admission testing (PAT) visit. If a patient tests positive, he/she will be given an ointment to use twice a day for five days in order to be treated prior to surgery. This is for the patient’s safety and for the best outcome possible for surgery and recovery.
