HCMC Home Health & Hospice Looking for Volunteers for Our Hospice Program

PARIS, TN – HCMC Home Health & Hospice is seeking people to volunteer with the organization with our hospice program.

Hospice volunteers often serve patients and families at the bedside but they also assist in the office, help raise awareness, contribute to educational programs and provide fundraising support.

Hospice is a special kind of support for those with a limited life expectancy and their families.  Hospice affirms life and chooses not to focus on the illness but instead focuses on providing a comfortable, supportive environment for a person whose life may be measured in months instead of years.

The entire Hospice team of caring professionals and volunteers work together to care for the patient and the family, paying special attention to the physical, spiritual and psychological needs of the patient.  Services include nursing care, counseling, assessment of needs and available community resources, pain control, therapy, grief support, as well as that much needed break for family members to run errands or take some personal time.

Hospice care is unique – it is reimbursed by Medicare, TennCare, and most private insurances, but often reimbursement doesn’t cover the total cost of care.  As a non-profit, county-owned facility, HCMC Home Health & Hospice covers the care and subsidizes reimbursement with memorial gifts, donations, and fundraising activities.

“HCMC Hospice was founded 25 years ago and our volunteers play an indispensable role in providing the very best care possible for our patients, their families and caregivers,” said Carman Wright, HCMC Hospice Social Worker.

According to the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization, there are an estimated 430,000 trained hospice volunteers providing more than 19 million hours of service to hospice programs each year and an estimated 1.6 million people in the United States are cared for by hospice every year.
