HCMC Celebrates National Physical Fitnesss & Sports Month

PARIS, TN – Henry County Medical Center is supporting the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness & Nutrition (PCSFN) in honor of National Physical Fitness and Sports Month. During the month of May, we challenge all adults to get 30 minutes of physical activity every day.

Did you know that regular physical activity increases your chances of living a longer, healthier life? It also reduces your risk for high blood pressure, heart disease, and some types of cancer.

“Building an exercise routine takes time. Slowly incorporate exercises into your weekly routine starting with a reasonable amount you can build on. Eventually you should be able to incorporate some sort of physical activity into every day,” said Jessica French, Athletic Trainer at the HCMC Center for Wellness & Rehabilitation. “You can start to get active with every day activities such as taking the stairs instead of the elevator, parking farther away from the grocery store and avoid sitting for long periods of time.”

The Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans recommend that adults aim for 2 hours and 30 minutes of moderate aerobic activity each week. Moderate activity includes things like walking fast, dancing, swimming, and raking leaves. It is also recommended that adults practice muscle-strengthening activities – like lifting weights or using exercise bands – at least 2 days a week.

The PCSFN engages, educates and empowers all Americans to adopt a healthy lifestyle that includes regular physical activity and good nutrition. Since 1956, the Council has created and promoted programs and initiatives that motivate people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities to be active and eat healthy.
